Doors Open Days 2010

WHAT LIES BEHIND SCOTLAND’S DOORS?

Celebrating 20 years of Doors Open Days in Scotland

2010 is the 20th anniversary of Doors Open Days, the annual free festival that celebrates Scotland’s buildings, places and spaces, old and new. Doors Open Days is organised locally by groups and individuals around the country and nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust.

In September, over four weekends, tens of thousands of people from across Scotland and beyond will be visiting castles, churches, houses, offices and factories for free. Over 900 sites and events will take part. Cities, towns, villages and countryside from the Highlands to the Lowlands are involved, opening up historic and contemporary buildings that are not normally accessible to the public or free to enter. The programme is packed with fascinating buildings to visit as well as many events, tours and talks for all ages.

Highlights in this year’s programme include:
  • a top secret WW2 underground military bunker in Inverness
  • a Masonic temple in Aberdeen
  • a lighthouse in Shetland, designed by Robert Louis Stevenson’s grandfather
  • ‘caves’ underneath Edinburgh’s South Bridge
  • a tour of allotments in Glasgow.
John Pelan, Director of the Scottish Civic Trust
“The Scottish Civic Trust is delighted to be celebrating 20 years of Doors Open Days in Scotland. It is a wonderful opportunity to discover our country’s rich built heritage. I would encourage everyone, young and old, residents and visitors, to make the most of this fantastic free event.”

Fiona Hyslop, Minister for Culture and External Affairs, said: “Regardless of whether your motivation is an appreciation for architecture or just nosiness, Doors Open Days offer a once in a year opportunity to get behind the scenes glimpses at a whole host of buildings. Across the country volunteers and coordinators have organised events that will appeal to all ages and I would encourage everyone to find out about what is happening locally and support Doors Open Days in its 20th year.”

Also, this year, the Scottish Civic Trust is publishing a 20-year timeline of highlights from the local programmes along with interviews with key people connected to the event. These can be viewed at www.doorsopendays.org.uk. The timeline and film will contain a mix of facts, photos, audio and video clips relating to Doors Open Days gone by and celebrates the fact that the scheme continues to grow in success each year. Last year’s programme comprised almost 1000 events in all 32 local authority areas of Scotland. With the help of 5,900 volunteers we attracted 260,000 visits, generating an estimated £2.4 million for the economy.

Doors Open Day Building - 2003

exterior, by Renzo Mazzolini

As in previous years, Keppie Design's Glasgow office will be opening their building for Doors Open Day this Saturday 20th September, from 10am till 4pm. Our office is housed in the former John Ross Memorial Church for the "Institute for the Adult Deaf and Dumb" and was converted in 1991 to form our company headquarters.

We are once again teaming up with Ozturk Modelmakers, who recently held their "Unbuilt Mackintosh" exhibition in our office. Four of the five models will be on display on Saturday and David Stark, our Managing Director, will be giving a talk about them and the company's link with Charles Rennie Mackintosh at 10.15am and 1.45pm.
