Erskine Care Home wins Building Better Healthcare Award

The Erskine Care Home, designed by Cooper Cromar for Erskine, picked up the award for Best Residential Care at the Building Better Healthcare Awards in London last week, now firmly established as the most respected awards in the healthcare built environment.

Founded in 1916, Erskine has cared for around 70,000 veterans throughout Scotland and provides unrivalled, modern nursing and dementia care facilities. The Erskine Care Home is a 37,200ft2, purpose-built, modern home in the heart of the Anniesland community, providing 46 spacious en-suite bedrooms and offering a spectrum of care to residents.

As an essentially urban solution, the accommodation is arranged over three floors, set around a central private landscaped courtyard, which is overlooked by glass-fronted balconies. Residents benefit from spacious, open-plan living and dining areas which are tastefully decorated using a neutral colour palette. Large windows make full use of daylight and quality, natural materials are used throughout the development to promote a sense of wellbeing and a homely atmosphere.

The shared vision of both Cooper Cromar and Erskine was to ensure that the residents enjoy the best quality of life possible.

Commenting on behalf of the judges, Quentin Wilson said, “This award goes to a project that stands as a testament to the continual investment into best practice care standards for the 21st century. Offering a spectrum of care ranging from residential social care to long term nursing care in the heart of the community.”

Cooper Cromar have received detailed planning consent for the construction of a new 40 bed Dementia Care Unit for the Scottish based charity Erskine, within the grounds of their existing hospital complex.

Erskine is the UK's foremost care facility for ex-Service men and women. Each year it cares for around 1,000 ex-Service men and women of all ages throughout Scotland. Creating a compassionate, homely environment is key to Erskine's person-centred approach to care.

Erskine first opened its doors at Bishopton near Glasgow in 1916 to tend the wounded returning from the battlefields of the First World War. Over 70,000 people have been cared for at Erskine and today's residents include the veterans and casualties who fought for our freedom in World War Two, as well as those involved in more recent conflicts around the world.
