Bedding Affect the Quality of Our Sleep?
6 June 2023
We can’t function without sleep. A lack of sleep not only make us feel drained, but increases the risk of many health problems, from diabetes to heart disease. If you can’t seem to get enough sleep, you should examine your sleep environment.
Although many people see bedding sets as decoration, they do contribute towards your quality of sleep. Here, we’ll explain how and look at other factors that could determine whether you feel well-rested after sleeping.
Does Bedding Affect the Quality of Our Sleep?
The Effect of Bedding on the Quality of Our Sleep
When it comes to materials for bedding sets, UK-based markets offer many options. From polyester to cotton and bamboo, the world’s your oyster. You may not realise it, but the material you choose affects the quality of your sleep. But how?
Breathability
Your body needs to be able to breathe during the night. Unfortunately, not all bedding set materials support this philosophy. Instead of allowing breathability, some materials could hinder it and cause discomfort and frustration.
If you choose artificial, heavily-processed materials, your body temperature will increase during the night, potentially causing you to wake up due to overheating.
Breathable materials like bamboo or cotton will keep you warm enough to feel comfortable but won’t cause overheating.
Allergens
Bedding sets represent a playground for allergens like dust mites. They can cause various symptoms, including a runny nose, coughing, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. If you want to prevent these unpleasant scenarios, pay attention to washing your bedding sets properly. This means washing at high temperatures and drying on high heat.
Comfort
You’re exhausted and can’t wait to go to bed. Once you’re tucked in, you realise the bed is extremely uncomfortable. Everything seems to be annoying you, and you can’t find a good sleeping position. As time passes, you start feeling anxious because you know you’ll feel tired in the morning.
For many people, this is a common occurrence. Some say it’s due to stress, others say they’re simply too tired to sleep. However, not many people suspect the problem may lie with their sheets.
By default, you can assume breathable materials offer comfort. After all, they offer superior temperature regulation, thus preventing overheating. However, many don’t like that these materials don’t provide much warmth, especially during winter.
Some people prefer silk bedding sets due to the luxurious feel the material provides when in contact with the skin. Others like cotton better because of its crispiness.
When it comes to comfort, the only thing you should focus on is your preferences. Choose a material that feels cosy, and enjoy a good night’s sleep.
It’s also important to mention that washing the bedding regularly contributes to the overall comfort. Nothing can beat the feeling of sleeping in freshly washed sheets. Plus, you’ll feel relieved knowing you’re sleeping on clean, allergen-free bedding.
What Other Factors Affect the Quality of Sleep?
Bedding sets play a major role in your quality of sleep. However, other factors can also cause you to feel well-rested or tired after sleeping.
The Mattress
Your matters should be soft enough to make you feel comfortable but firm enough to offer support to your body. In terms of firmness, it’s all about your preferences and your usual sleeping position. For example, if you’re a side sleeper, you’ll probably find softer mattresses more comfortable.
The Room
Your bedroom should be a calming oasis where you can relax. A small but valuable addition to your bedtime routine could be essential oils. Of course, don’t just use any oil you come across. Some oils give you an energy boost, and this is definitely not something you want right before bed.
Our recommendation is lavender – it smells amazing and has a calming effect.
The Light
You’re tossing and turning in bed, and it seems like you’ll never sleep again. So, you pick up your phone or tablet, see what’s new on social networks, or stream a TV show or movie in hopes it will tire you out. This is a big mistake. These devices emit blue light, which may actually be the reason you’re up in the first place.
It’s best not to use your phone or tablet at least an hour or two before bedtime. If you absolutely need to use them, enable blue light filters via settings.
Bedding Sets Are Both Aesthetic and Functional
Bedding sets are more than eye candy; they play a vital role in how we sleep. When purchasing bedding sets, UK customers focus on breathability, comfort, and aesthetics. If you’re not sure what material to get but want to feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud, choose cotton or cotton mixed with polyester. Both of which are always a safe bet.
