Glasgow Property Extension
The project involved the remodelling of a 1920′s semi located in Broomhill, a northerly suburb of Glasgow. The main aim was the creation of a new kitchen and dining room orientated towards a rather secret and well-loved walled garden facing south and west bringing the social dimension of both house and garden closer together.
A very basic timber box is given a surprising twist by the incorporation of two contrasting and cantilevered bays, one on the entrance side and one at the garden side.
The bay on the entrance side consists of a curved cedar shingle-clad wall giving the small entry courtyard architectural presence and hinting at the position of a discreet ‘back door’. Internally this forms an entrance lobby and the beginning of a careful spatial sequence which culminates in the private garden.

The bay on the garden side is a blue-rendered box, trimmed with cedar floating between ground and clerestory glass forming a solid and colourful counterpoint to the large sliding glass screens. Internally, this bay creates a beech-lined seating niche closing the sequence of spaces beginning at the main entrance to the existing house and delaying the final view of the garden till arrival in the new space of the extension.
