Glasgow University Library in Scotland is one of the oldest and largest university libraries in Europe. At the turn of the 21st century, the main library building itself held 1,347,000 catalogued print books, and 53,300 journals.

In total, the university library system including branch libraries now holds approximately 2.5 million books and journals. The University also holds extensive archival material in a separate building, including the Scottish Business Archive.

The current 12-storey building was opened in 1968 and is a prominent landmark in the city’s West End. In 2014, there were over 1.7 million visits made to the library.

Designed by William Whitfield CBE (1920 – 2019), the present 12-storey library was constructed in 1968 and extended in the 1980s and 1990s. It formed the centerpiece of the new campus buildings built across Hillhead during the 1960s.

The Victorian grandeur of Glasgow University has been enhanced with a bold, multi-coloured refurbishment at the heart of the historic campus. Founded in 1451 and Britain’s fourth-oldest university, the institution moved in 1870 to Gilmorehill where its Gothic spire, quadrangles and chapels became celebrated architectural landmarks which, like their Oxbridge rivals, have stood the test of time.
