New Structure in Scottish new town in North Lanarkshire by contractor Morrison Construction.

Stunning new £37m Cumbernauld Academy and Cumbernauld Theatre is handed over to North Lanarkshire Council ahead of new school term in August.

Just a few weeks before the start of the autumn school term, the new £37m Cumbernauld Academy and Cumbernauld Theatre has been formally handed over to North Lanarkshire Council by contractor, Morrison Construction, acting alongside hub South West, the public-private partnership focused on building community infrastructure within Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway.

The new campus hosts a secondary school with capacity for 1250 secondary pupils and a replacement venue for the current Cumbernauld Theatre, which includes such facilities as a 305-seat main theatre auditorium, an 80-seat digital media cinema, café, studio theatre with 105-seat capacity and a dance studio.

Cllr Frank McNally, Convener of Education and Families, said: “The new campus is truly stunning and will provide enormous educational benefits for young people in the area for generations to come. We will also ensure that the building can bring new opportunities for the wider community to benefit from.”

“The council is committed to going even further and has radical plans to deliver modern, state-of-the-art, facilities through our Community Investment Fund. This new programme will build on our impressive track record, benefiting every area of North Lanarkshire.”

Michael McBrearty, chief executive of hub South West, said: “The fine new educational and arts facilities marks a significant moment in the history of Cumbernauld, and we believe it symbolises also a new era in the future development of the town.”

Morrison Construction Central Scotland Managing Director Eddie Robertson, said: “I am delighted to celebrate the completion of this state-of-the-art education facility for the Cumbernauld community. This important milestone demonstrates the continued success of our working relationship with North Lanarkshire Council and hub South West.

‘‘During the construction of this fantastic building, we have invested £20.2million into the community through the employment of local businesses. Our progressive social value programme also provided 165 days of work experience, supported 13 apprenticeships, three graduates and created 10 jobs.’’

The Design, Build, Finance and Maintain (DBFM) contract for Cumbernauld Academy and Cumbernauld Theatre is the third in a series of large school projects designed and built on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council by hub South West and Morrison Construction following the successful delivery of Clyde Valley Campus and Greenfaulds High School.
