Demolition proposal for 12 high-rise blocks in Cumbernauld boosted after the Scottish Government provided up £3.2m to buy out the owners.
Sanctuary Cumbernauld Housing association is behind the £70m project to demolish the 1960s high-rises and replace them with 440 homes for affordable rent.
In 2011 72% of the high-rise residents voted in favour of the plans to demolish these tower block buildings. The delay in demolition was caused by the need to buy out the 100 people who still own their homes in the blocks.

Cumbernauld is a large town in the historic county of Dunbartonshire and council area of North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is the tenth most-populous locality in Scotland and the most populated town in North Lanarkshire, positioned in the centre of Scotland’s Central Belt.
Cumbernauld was designated as the site for a New Town on 9 December 1955. This led to rapid expansion and building for about 40 years until the town became established as the largest in North Lanarkshire.
The first new housing became available in 1958. An additional 3,638 acres (1,472 ha) was added to the designated town area on 19 March 1973 to accommodate a revised target population of 70,000.
