The theme on the principal floor was ports – Genoa, Hamburg and Marseille – with students divided into groups, given a city and a site. We show some of the more captivating models and images but are happy to consider submissions from students for consideration of publication. Comments and descriptions are welcome.

Mackintosh School of Architecture Degree Show 2013 – Stage 5

This year the students had visited three ports – Marseille, Hamburg and Genoa – all projects were based there, and many had water at their heart. As always there was a display of wall-mounted illustrations, computerised drawings and montages.

Sketch books / design diaries were left out for the visitor’s perusal. I was puzzled to see no sketches in any of the sketchbooks I looked through, just writing, written observations and ‘to do’ lists.

Models for a large part were displayed at floor level and uninviting to give the attention they may have deserved. For third year I would have liked to see a deeper understanding of material s through model making.

There was no sense of design development, no evidence of train of thought, perhaps through the lack of hand-drawn sketches. There were however many beautiful illustrations made in varying ways and that is really the positive message I will take away with me.
