The city was the powerhouse of the World in the Victorian age so has a wealth of mercantile buildings – offices, warehouses, factories – but more recently, building on the foundations of Rennie Mackintosh and Alexander Thomson, a rekindled enthusiasm for innovative buildings.

Scottish Contemporary Architecture as a whole has been generally ‘quiet’ since GK&C’s buildings around thirty years ago. Good buildings need good Clients as much as good architects and Glasgow’s housing developments such as Homes for the Future and Graham Square have been great test beds for innovation as well as being quality housing developments.

Key architects with major buildings in the city include Elder & Cannon, Page/Park, Gareth Hoskins Architects, RMJM and until their split gm+ad architects.

Buildings in Glasgow have been overshadowed around the turn of the century by those in Edinburgh – the Museum of Scotland and the Scottish Parliament, but with Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield, Richard Rogers, Foster & Partners and plenty of strong local talent, the city looks like it can regain some attention. However the buildings by these foreign star architects has caused major controversy in the city. Buildings such as the GSA extension, the Transport Museum, BBC HQ, Homes for the Future 2 and ill-fated bridge to name but a few.
